Sleep Training: Day 1

Well, yesterday was... challenging. We are SO very lucky that Baby D fell into a good night sleeping habit (only waking up once in the middle of the night to eat and then fall right asleep), but days have been a little bit more...irregular. His naps today went a little something like this:
Nap 1: 15 minutes
Nap 2: 15 minutes
Nap 3: 30 minutes (total)
Nap 4: 45 minutes (total)

So... we're working on it. It sucks hearing him cry in his crib (as opposed to blissfully sleeping in his swing), but the analogy that really hit home for me was when the author asked you to think about comparing your sleep on a plane or car vs. sleeping in your own bed. Of course you sleep better in your bed, even though with frequent awakenings in a car or plane, you do eventually get lulled back to sleep. So its tempting to just put him in the swing, but I am holding firm. His physical need for sleep is the same (if not more important) than his physical need for food: its NOT optional. And when we keep him awake for too long, he goes a little crazy, screaming at the top of his lungs... I am trying to put him to sleep before he gets to that point, reading him a book and singing/humming to him before putting him down for the nap.

This is the hardest thing I have even had to do. Its not getting any easier (yet)...

Do you have the "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" book? It's soo great! Jacob now sleeps 13 hours a night and takes at least an hour nap with two or less hours in between to play. It's awesome!
