TOMORROW is officially the start of the month of May. And yes, mother nature may be playing cruel by making it snow this morning, but not even that can dampen my spirits...

I have THREE REAL weeks of school/teaching left.
As much as I love teaching, I am SO excited to have more time to work on the projects that seem to keep piling up on me... not to mention some serious work I have to do on Banana's/Baby D's room (the owners before left it...well, its certainly the opposite of eye candy) that I should have done back when we moved in. Poor Bananas.

And I am ready to soak up some sun :)
Bring it on, Summer.

We have the greatest roommate ever!

I want you to show me anyone who would bake a cake for you
FROM SCRATCH on your anniversary.
No one else would. That is why Bananas is freaking awesome.
Loveloveloveher. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
[She even put a little red D for Baby D!!]

Dear Body,

Well, I am going to be completely up front and honest with you. The next six months are going to be quite a challenge. You are (probably) going to get quite a bit bigger, and then of course, Baby D will be moving out (finally). Now, I am not promising we will be back to pre-baby body by November (that goal will be reserved for June 2011 in time for running the San Diego Rock 'N Roll Marathon), but I certainly promise to do everything in my power to take advantage of late summer/early fall harvest time and buy lots of good, healthy food until we can start running again...which will be a glorious day indeed. I'll be sure to celebrate with a brand spanking new pair of running shoes--and I won't even look at the pricetag!

We've been through running hundreds of miles and put in thousands of workout hours BBD (before baby D), so I am pretty sure we can do this whole baby thing. The important thing is to not get too discouraged every time we look in the mirror and see just a shadow (but a very large shadow) of Mrs. D. that can barely fit into what is left of even the larger sizes of maternity clothes.

In 4 short weeks, school will be out, and Summer will have officially started. That means you can spend all morning in (men's size basketball) shorts and a tshirt and all afternoon floating in the pool in your new swimsuit....heaven.

The end is near. It will come sooner than you know it. So for the time being, just enjoy your time with Mr. D all to yourself. And don't be afraid to do a little more yoga. Its good for you.

Mrs. D

Calling somebody else fat won't make you any skinnier. And ruining Regina George's life definitely didn't make me any happier. All you can do in life is try to solve the problem in front of you.

Haha oh... too bad I have ALL THIS in front of me... 28 weeks and I think I'm at 34 pounds-ish. So much for a pound a week.
As you can see, I can barely keep a straight face looking at myself. It just keeps getting better :)
Maybe there is some sort of world record out there I can break?

April 28th... Happy 4th Anniversary, Mr. D

This guy.... he has been through a lot with me these last FOUR years, especially in the last six months with all the changes I've been having to deal with. The best thing aside from his wonderful back massages (most of the time unasked for!) of being married to Mr. D is that he has allowed me to wear (most of the time without even asking) his Tshirts and gym shorts, since they are about the only (comfortable) things that fit me anymore! I love this man and know I am extremely blessed to be with him... as much as the initial thought of labor terrifies me, it calms me down SO much to think about having him by my side the whole time.

I love you, poopface.

Ruler for a Day!

My good friend (and fellow BYU grad and Red Sox Afficionado) Siovhan, featured me on her blog,, as "Ruler for a Day." She is a hilarious blogger, SUPER cute, and has always been one of my favorites bloggers to, she dubbed me the title of "Red Sox Mama," which I love. Here's a copy of the post, but I definately suggest checking out her blog...someday mine will look as cute as hers. Thanks, Siovhan, for totally making my day!!

I met my dear friend Ruth through her adorable husband Drew. Drew and I were in the same program at BYU and he's from Boston, instant connection. THEN I met Ruth. I love this freaking lady. She's funny, smart, REALLY creative and artistic, determined, and one heck of a runner to boot. Plus she's gonna be a momma soon!! Yay new rex soxian!

Ruth said:

1. I am married to Drew Dowling , conosseur of all things New England and Red Sox.
2. I have the best job in the world...teaching art to high schoolers!
3. I ran a race every month for 13 months straight, including 2 half marathons.
4. I can rock curly AND straight hair.
5. I graduated BYU with one major in the time it took Anna to graduate with two :) (wait, I guess that would be why SHE rocks!)
6. I AM growing a little human being inside of me :)
7. I LOVE reading... and am almost always in the process of reading at least 3 books.
8. I have a cat that plays fetch.
9. Did I mention Drew Dowling? Best decision I ever made.
10. I'm half Chilean. That means, yes, I can understand my students who mutter spanish expletives under their breath :)

Happy 2nd Birthday, Little Kevs!

If you don't know the story of how our little Kevs came into our family by no small miracle (and how I literally helped bring him into this world), it was one of my first posts HERE. His first birthday in 2009 has some more pictures HERE. I know we will never, ever have a pet quite like this guy, mostly because I cannot ever imagine Mr. D allowing another pregnant cat into our home again...once was enough. So while I am sure most of you think it's a little silly to be celebrating the birthday of a cat (or any animal for that matter), it was pretty big deal for us, being the first being we took care of and raised from birth.

Over the last year, The Kevs has by some miracle adapted to a new home, learned to drink out of the toilet or his drinking fountain (instead of every faucet he could find), become a total affectionate little booger, made two girlfriends, killed a lizard in front of our very eyes, and literally perfected the art of "catch." In a nutshell...he is hysterical. And I love him SO much. I can't wait for Baby D to meet him, since we know he will probably recognize the Kevs' purring from the womb (as Kevs is usually laying across my belly in the mornings). For being "just a cat," he really lights up my life.

Cousin Emmett's Wedding

Also known as the reason for our under-48-hour trip to San Diego. :)
Mr. D really does have the most beautiful cousins.
It would be more intimidating if they weren't so sweet!
I've been married almost 4 years to this stinkin' cutie!

San Diego Zoo

Four hours of walking around in the heat... but completely worth it.

Banana's Graduation weekend

Auntie Bananas...she's a big kid now.

Roommates :)
The Whole Familia!

For mom... the most amazing house in San Diego. WOW.

swimsuit: the final verdict.

So, when I posted about two swimsuit options, everyone chose the $155 one. Coincidence? I think not. Thankfully, I chose one that was only $40 total... from Motherhood Maternity, where else??
I love that they call this a "babydoll" maternity swimsuit, because I could only wish it looked baggy like this on me...I definately fill it in much more than this model here, but you get the idea. I'm so thrilled to have finally gathered the guts to try on a swimsuit. I never really expected to find anything I liked, but I did, and just in the nick of time... Uncle Chris' pool is warmed up and ready to go this week and with all the (belly) pressure I have been feeling lately, it will certainly be nice to have this 30 pound weight lifted off of me--I have never in my life been so excited about swimming. The best part about that pool is that the only person who will be swimming with me (aside from Mr. D) will be 90 year old Granny, who never ceases to tell me how great I look pregnant and that I don't look huge at all. How could I not love that? My face may be starting to "chub out" like the rest of my body, but at least as of yesterday, I am done with my first two trimesters!!! Only 12 weeks left! Halleluja!

Usually conversations about my enlarged midsection are in the comfort of my own classroom and go a little like this:
Student: "So, how many weeks are you missing at the end of the year?"
Me: "Um, I'm not due till July. weeks. I will be here till the end of the school year."
Student: [Blatently staring at my stomach] "Really. Not May?"

On the other hand, my conversation with a female Quizno's worker was a little more interesting and went a little something like this:
Me: "Can I have a turkey bacon guacamole on wheat?"
Worker: "Woah! You look like you are about to POP! When are you due?"
Me: "July. Still have three months."
Worker: "WHAT?! There's no way." [Looks at Mr. D, who nods] "Really?? I mean, I don't want to sound rude or anything, but you are so tiny...where is the rest of the baby going to go?"
Me: [Shrugs]
Worker: "Well, maybe you're carrying a football player in there or something... hey, [motioning to a male co-worker] look at her belly! Its huge!... are you sure you're not carrying twins?"

Haha oh, man. Good recovery. I know Mr. D is wishing for an NBA or NFL player to pop out of me. And good thing I'm carrying a boy or I may have gotten offended  :)

Showering Baby D

Before the madness began... I love my sisters!!
"Guess how fat I am" Game...
everyone thought I was MUCH bigger than I actually am!
The REAL entertainment of the day... two of my best friends little babies!
Thanks, mom!
Cousin Kenna's charade was "going into labor"... it was definitely my favorite and I hope to remind her in a few years to stand while she's delivering her first baby :)
And...the whole party gang! (minus aunt Michelle and the photogs)
Thanks for a great shower!!

I want (even though its not quite) Wednesday

I have had the most terrible time sleeping the past few weeks. I know for a fact that part of it is due to there being so much light in our bedroom from the car lot across the street, and the blinds we have are terrible. I do feel like we need some blackout curtains.
And this Boppy Total Body pillow looks so luxuriously comfortable, even if it is $50. Somehow no matter how many different pillows I use, there is always at least one part of my body that is terribly uncomfortable...usually my waistline (which now continuously feels like I have a shelf coming out of my midsection, it is so heavy). Oh, the glories of growing a human being... :)

So...this is the only photo from Saturday that I have so far... The breakfast with my sisters before all the craziness began. And yes, I did have 4 plates at the CANC, but only because they insist on only putting one slice of french toast on each plate. And who only eats one slice of french toast?? Not me.
Someone ::cough:: [Surrah] still has all of the pics on her camera. Get on it, woman!
There are so many things I can teach in my classes. Its almost overwhelming, but in a good way, if that makes sense. Between painting, sculpture, and art foundations, I can pretty much cover anything and everything that I can manage to fit in a term or semester. Unfortunately, a lot of those things have been not explained well enough, poorly executed, or just BAD ideas on my part. I suppose that is one of the greatest reasons why I have such a strong desire to continue teaching after this year... I continue to refine and revise what I am having my students think about and create, getting discouraged (but only for a short time!) at the projects that fail miserably and feeling the thrill of excitement emanating from my students when they really "get" a new project, or especially when a-project-that-had-previously-failed-miserably-and-I-swore-off-but-then-changed-a-few-things-and-the-students-are-just-running-with-it (in a good way, of course).

My inspiration for said assignment? This American Artist named Mark Jenkins, does tape figures, dresses them up in everyday clothing (and a redhead wig, in these examples) and then utilizes them as public art. Needless to say, my students are so excited. I can't wait for DK to come to my class on Thursday and see it all in action.

my favorite healthy muffins

I've actually had quite a few requests for this recipe over the last year or two since I made them the first time, so here it is:

Apple Muffins Get Healthy

Low-fat muffins that are infused with yummy cinnamon and hearty oat-bran Heart Guards

Prep: 10 min Cook: 25 min
(Courtesy of my FAVORITE magazine, Women's Health)

These baked beauties are a breakfast food lover and cardiologist pleaser-the pectin fiber in apples, the oat bran, and the vitamin E-rich canola oil are loved by docs because together they lower cholesterol-  both total and LDL  and keep insulin and blood sugar levels under control.
But protecting yourself against heart disease won't even cross your mind when this dessert-worthy combo of apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg hits your taste buds. Too yummy to be typecast as breakfast treat, these low-fat muffins can be popped anytime for a filling and satisfying bite.

1/2 c oat bran
1 c whole-wheat flour
1/4 c ground flaxseed
tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
1 egg, beaten
4 Tbsp canola oil
1/3 c applesauce
1 shredded apple
1/4 c sugar
1/4 c chopped pecans

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together bran, flour, flaxseed, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

3. In a separate bowl, whisk together egg and oil until smooth. Stir in applesauce, shredded apple, and sugar. Combine mixtures and fold in pecans.

4. Spoon batter into paper-lined muffin cups. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes or until tops spring back when lightly touched. Cool the apple muffins a wire rack.

Makes 12. Per muffin: 147 cal, 9 g fat (1 g sat), 163 mg sodium, 18 g carbs, 3 g fiber, 3 g protein

my little wiggler

My sweet sisters (with the assistance of Mr. D's Aunt and cousins) threw me the GREATEST BABY SHOWER EVER this afternoon....quite a feat, since A (who was spearheading the whole operation) has been in Vegas for a conference the last few days, is prepping for graduation in less than a week, and got to bed at 4am this morning before waking up at 8am to start the Baby Shower Prep!! I cannot tell you how much I love my sisters. "To infinity and beyond" would certainly be a start. I'll post pics just as soon as I get them (since everyone else was taking pictures and still needs to get them to me) but it was SO nice to be surrounded by that many family and friends and to get so many lovely gifts for our spoiled little guy! Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who came (and a bunch of people who wanted to but couldn't come but I know would have loved to be were there in spirit!!).

Here's a little email I got from my dad today that made me just well up with tears:

I hope that you had a nice baby shower today (and that you are "nice and clean" now).

This morning I read in my journal from 25 years ago.  On April 16, 1985 your mother had her first sonogram and saw you wiggling around and writing on the walls of your mother's tummy.  It's ironic that 25 years later you have your own little wiggler doing cave drawings in your belly.
I love you and look forward to seeing you again in a few days!

So. Cool.

Today I feel so very lucky. And happy. And loved.

it must be a friday

Its days like today that are good but exhausting where I think, wouldn't it be great if I could just paint and draw and do nothing else all day??
Those days are numbered for me... and they begin May 28th :). 25 days (5 Fridays) of school left!

oh the joys of teaching

The principals agreed to bring in an aide for our stealthy friend, to ensure that someone was keeping an eye on him while he was in my class and would walk him out. Thank goodness.

**Original Post**
We had an assembly today, so as soon as all the students were gone, I turned off the lights, locked the door and left. Not more than 10 minutes later, something didn't feel right, so I went back into my classroom to see my PERSONAL cabinet right by my desk opened on BOTH SIDES and random stuff that I KNOW I put away looking very disheveled. I felt a little weirded out, put the stuff back where it belonged and then heard a shuffling...the klepto in one of my classes (who has stolen dozens of my art supplies over the last few months and gets searched multiple times a day) had stayed behind in my class without me knowing it and was CRAWLING ON HIS HANDS AND KNEES  behind desks to keep me from seeing him. He was "looking for his backpack."

And what do the principals say?? "We're just trying to keep him out of jail."

I love my job. I really do. But sometimes....
Augh. Public Schools are NOT here to babysit your child. Especially not the ones who OBVIOUSLY need CONSTANT supervision.

Doctor's Visit #5

[[From Doctor]] "Well, the average for women to gain in their entire pregnancy is between 25-35 pounds... but I think you'll be gaining a little above average. But don't worry about it, its just a number."

That was right before he told me they don't/won't induce labor until the 41st week of pregnancy. I mean, I am all about having this boy when he's all set and ready, but when he (inevitably) comes tearing through me at like 10+ pounds, you'll know where my finger of blame will be pointing. But, you know, 10 is just a number.

If you had told me to guess how much I would gain this whole pregnancy, I would have said 20 pounds, maybe 25. Have I mentioned yet how uncomfortable that much weight is to carry??

Needless to say, as uncomfortable as I am, the thought of going into labor still scares it ignorance but I really try not to think about it too much. I know it will happen and I know it will probably hurt. And I feel like maybe that's all I really care to know about right now. Maybe once I get up to 40 pounds and there's nowhere for my stomach to go but to assimilate into my lungs, maybe then labor won't seem so bad.

Don't get me wrong, I know I am blessed to be able to carry a child, and it fills my whole being with happiness when I can feel him moving around and know that he is OK. I just can't believe I still have three months to go....

are all pregnancies this long??

random baby thoughts

Dear Baby D,
I am sorry my torso is so can blame that on your grandma and grandpa. I know that you barely have room to move around now, seeing as how you are about 14 inches long and weigh almost two pounds...but is that really a reason to constantly be stabbing me with those pointy elbows and knees of yours?? You will have all the space in the world in just a few short months, I promise.

I am thrilled that your little acrobatics seem to entertain Mr. D and the Kevs as they watch the rippling of my tummy. But sometimes I'm worried you're not getting enough sleep!

Also, people keep asking me lately what you've been making me crave... unfortunately, the answer is EVERYTHING!! I have never felt so hungry so often in my whole life. Its a very strange feeling to be eating until you can't eat anymore, but you are still hungry! Hopefully that means you are growing a lot.

Also, I have to apologize for what a terrible day it has been today...your poor little developing eardrums. I can feel you jumping at the sound of the fire alarm that has gone off not once, but twice today at school, for "safety drills." I am praying you aren't going deaf.

So...keep growing and don't come too late... your mom is not sure how much more weight she is going to be able to bear before she topples over! We'll be spending a lot of time going on runs this fall, I can already tell.

Your daddy and I love you SO much...and so does the Kevs, even if he steps (and sometimes stands) on you every morning to try to say hello to me. I am sure you two will be the best of friends. We still have a whole other trimester to go, so please keep growing and don't hurt me too much on the way out, okay?

The week-long Baby Shower

My crafty mother and I (with a little help from DK)
made the cutest I spy bags!
One for our little guy, and the other two for my cousin's kids! SO fun.
And we got to visit with my Grandma one more time
before I left (P.S. I think that shirt makes me look HUGE!)
Well, everything's packed and I've officially done everything on my "to do" list... I can't believe I am going back to "the real world" tomorrow (and then work on Monday!)...but its been SUCH a good vacation. My parents have been amazing and it really, truly has been like a week-long Baby Shower: I've been showered with love, attention 24/7, and presents galore... Baby D and I have been SO spoiled. This could not have been a more perfect week with my parents and DK, and now we begin the countdown until they come out for A's graduation a week from Wednesday!
