Belated Birthday wishes

... or maybe not so belated, since we did give her a surprise birthday party a whole month in advance. Nevertheless, my lovely mother turned 50 this past Saturday. I know. She has NO wrinkles and I'm pretty sure even my 11-year old brother has had more pimples than my mother has in her entire lifetime... she has some GREAT skin. And she's a fabulous dresser, has a real creative eye for bedazzling up an otherwise ho-hum accessory, never loses her cool, and is my absolute role model. What a woman. I wish I could have been there for her (second) surprise birthday party of the summer, but I will have to be content knowing she was surrounded by her sisters and other best friends. I love you, mom, and promise to stop keeping track of your years after 50... at least until you turn 75 (and hopefully you will have a few grandchildren by then!!) Also, kudos to my lovely Mama for finally embarking on what Regis and Kelly still consider a "fad"... trying out computers! A got a MacbookPro (luckyyy) and gave my mom her PC, complete with bookmarks of her favorite websites :) Love you, mom!! (and maybe someday we will teach you how to post a comment on a blog...)

Football Friday Night

It may be 95 degrees outside but it MUST be fall.. high school football has started!! I am FULL of Viking pride, especially after watching last weeks game, where they CRUSHED the undefeated state champs, and they are currently kicking butt again tonight!! I love watching/listening to my Mr. D announcing games... he gets so into the game and he's so good! And I love looking at the Football roster... and realizing that nearly a third of the players are in my classes!! Student Athletes are really the greatest, because they are SO motivated to do well in school. GO team!

Jackson Pollock would be proud...

I can't believe it has been almost a week since this birthday party happened, but it has. My first full week into teaching, I am super busy and do not have much downtime to watch Conan or Family Guy with Mr. D, hang out with friends coming back into town, or just do nothing... not that I am complaining. I LOVE being busy and feeling a sense of purpose is like adrenaline coursing through my veins. I am just relieved for the weekends where I have two days to catch my breath before doing it all again. And now presenting... the 10 Pollockians by a gaggle of 12-year old girls. What a great birthday party idea, KP!

When you buy a half bushel of peaches...

Be careful. You will probably end up with a lot of this... A bit of this... (Thank you Better Homes and Garden, the greatest cookbook there ever was) And a yummy bite of this. Yum. Peach Pie with toasted candied pecan topping. P.S. I did make two pies. And they were AWESOME!!! P.P.S. I have eaten at least 4 peaches every day for the last weekend. I LOVE Utah Peaches.

The day before...

I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous. But I do feel prepared, and fairly confident that I have the cleanest and most organized art room there ever was (or will be). I am excited to play with 90 minute class periods, something I have coveted since I learned they co-existed in the same world with 25-minute "art on a cart" classes... ::shudder:: My only concerns are that my lessons take up just the right amount of time, that we do not blaze OR trudge through them (the latter of which drove me nuts during student teaching). I am ready, with my (near-) perfectly decorated art room (I am still missing a few things... IKEA is calling this weekend). I have finally arrived, and will soon experience two days of a blur of 200+faces with some of the most peculiar names I must somehow memorize ASAP. It will be a challenge and I will need as many prayers as I can get. But I feel most confident that earned this job, I love art, I love teaching, and I am able to communicate my passion for art with my students. Don't worry, I will take pictures of my clean classroom (yay!) before all those students come in and make it messy (boo).

hair hair hair

Remember this sad post? Well, I am pleased to say that it has been a full year since I brutally hacked all my lovely locks off. And, thankfully, I no longer look like this little boy: And here's to another year keeping scissors away from my hair!! (my face is covered up with my bangs because I have a gross looking cold sore, but still wanted to document the moment!)

COLOR!!! The best reason to start gardening... that you basically have an on-call FREE grocery store in your front yard. The dawning of each day has turned into one a little like Christmas morning for me...a little present or two waiting for me. I love running out in the morning, seeing what is ripe and ready to be picked, gleefully picking them (of course) and planning lunch and/or dinner around those veggies. So instead of posting a traditional Victory Garden update (week 12...that's 3 months today!!), I thought I would show off the direct product of said garden project: deliciously healthy meals. Here was the dinner I made for a sister in our ward. (Starting at 12 o'clock, clockwise): Pastel de fideos (noodles baked with egg, milk and cheese), banana chocolate chip bread, peaches, roma grape tomatoes, and zucchini baked with a little olive oil. And our dinner... two-thirds from our garden :)

I can't even contain myself... glory of all glories, I just received notice (via text from nephew Addi) that Katie was home!!! After faithfully writing her (just about) every week for the last 18 months while she has been in Cincinatti, I FINALLY got to talk to her on the phone tonight!! I can't wait for the 22nd, when she comes back to her REAL home (here!) and we can hang out again!!!! What a great day. I've already started working on our "movies to watch" list... 17 Again, Harry Potter, Dark Knight, Wall-E, Iron Man, Mamma Mia and Sweeny Todd (both of which I have still not seen), James Bond, Horton Hears a Who, Slumdog Millionaire, Australia, Indiana Jones, Juno, Persepolis, and (!!) HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3!!! AND OF COURSE WE WILL BE SEEING FAME!!!! If anyone has any other ideas for awesome movies she may have missed out on since leaving January 2008, please let me know?!?

Today was (another) great day... greenie orientation. I made a new friend. But I still miss my Katie. And wish she would come home soon!

*gasp* ...finally finished.

Well, it took me a week (about a day per book) but I finished all 4 books in the Twilight series, just in time for my last week of summer! Not bad, but the 4th book was by and large my favorite, since the main character, Bella, was no longer the "damsel in distress" (that really gets on my nerves after awhile). Breaking Dawn was really a fascinating story, I don't really care if it was plagarized; it was good. And no, I have no desire to become a vampire bride :) Although comparing myself now to pictures from high school, I look like a vampire... I am so white. So much for having a free, sunny summer... I've become too concerned with skin cancer over the last two years. Which is probably better for my overall health, right?? I keep telling myself that. Besides, who wants to look like a tan, blonde barbie with Shirley Temple curls all the time? Been there, done that! senior year (2004) after a winter of daily tanning booth trips...oy.

My not so poor oven, chocolate chip banana bread, and week 11 VG update!

Remember this little (yummy but dangerously messy) atrocity from LAST SUMMER with Amax? Well, it took a lot of work, but was so overdue and I was terribly proud of finally cleaning an oven for the first time in my life! And last night I made chocolate chip banana bread (I always forget how much I hate the smell, feel, etc of mashed bananas). I figured it was appropriate to put with the garden pictures, since I never did take any pictures of the 4 loaves of zucchini bread I made last week. And my week 11 Victory Garden "harvest" total is 28 tomatoes, 3 zucchini, and probably 2 pounds of herbs.

Now accepting requests for the Mrs. D Christmas "Card" 2009

The last day in Boston, while making buckeyes for Little B, I made the executive decision of what our Christmas "card" would consist of... A BOX OF BUCKEYES!! Brilliant, right?? Because other than people who are allergic to PB, is there really a better gift you can ask for? Mr. D, at least, thinks not. But in the off chance that someone is allergic or doesn't like PB, I am willing to make chocolate covered pretzels as well. Any takers?

Mrs. D... bandwagon-jumper extrordinaire

Yeah... I read Twilight (7 hours) And New Moon (8 hours, but only because for the first 100 pages I was half-watching TV with Mr. D) And you know what? It wasn't half bad. The only bummer was these two boys weren't thrilled I ignored them for so long...

Lucky Girl.

Driving on my way home from the school today, listening to the radio, I just started to cry. I am so lucky. I have a job that I literally cannot BE anymore excited about (with a classroom that is finally organized up to my standards), I have a college degree, and I can support my family on my salary. I feel like I am so undeserving of it. Why me? Why not one of the dozen colleagues I graduated with? Or someone more experienced? Sometimes I am so afraid I am going to wake up and realize this was all a dream. Even worse, I can't even think about what may happen after next year... its too upsetting to me to think about possibly not coming back (assuming Mr. D gets another job). I want to be here forever. Okay, maybe not forever, but I am excited to get in a few years, if I can!! Granted, I haven't technically started my job yet, but I had SUCH a good experience student teaching, that I am sure the addition of my own curriculum will make it even better (as if that were possible!). On another note, I cannot WAIT for these girls to get here later this month... it really can't be soon enough!! I miss you girls!

august means the end of summer

which would be devastating if not for the fact that autumn comes after summer... my most favorite season full of scarves, cute sweaters, perfect (running) weather, crisp air, harvest time, thanksgiving, and going back to school (something about the smell of new notebooks and unsharpened pencils just gives me the chills!). August, I welcome you with open arms... as long as you go quickly to leave lots of room for september!!

say it with me... mmm mmm mmm

I love summer... Because summer means fresh fruit parfaits! Care to try? (from bottom to top) 1/2 chopped peach 3/4 c. plain nonfat yogurt (1/8 tsp. vanilla and 1 tsp honey mixed into the yogurt) 4 slices strawberries 1/2 sliced banana a swirl of honey on top to taste :)
