Start of the hunt for OCTOBER

I cannot believe that this month has come and gone so fast. We just set Christmas travel plans for Boston and Columbus, one week apiece, as we have done the last 3 years. And while I am so very excited to see family again, we do have to leave poor Kevin at home, as it will cost $360 to take him with us...that would be like buying him his own plane ticket!! I guess the family will have to wait till graduation to meet him. On another travel note, we (the hubby and 2 brothers in law) are leaving for L.A. (driving) again this weekend to watch the Red Sox v. Angels game and visit with the father in law! It should be a blast and I am going to try to do a lot of sketches or watercolor, even if it is a short weekend. And when we get back, its Christmas decorating time!! (Just kidding... I will wait until at least Halloween weekend!) In watercolors I am working on painting plaster head casts. I think they will look marvelous. Also, my "Unseen" paintings have taken a turn in an interesting direction... look for new posts on my website by the start of next week!

Watercolor Assignment from Joe. Trace a Chicken and watercolor 28 of them. Wicked awesome, right?? I like it. Here are a few of my favs so far, the rest will be posted on my website (listed on the last post) HAHA I know that sounds horrible. But its true. My watercolor teacher Joe gave us this fact sheet about chickens and two images of baby chicks that we were to trace and then watercolor. I will have to do 28 total, I think and it should be cool. Wow. Three posts in one day is a bit excessive, I know. But GREAT news! I have just completed everything I need to apply to Student Teach! There is a light at the end of the tunnel and I am almost there! I am thrilled. I want to go celebrate!

Well, I finally did it. I got the guts to quit at Mimi's. We had this really good lecture today in English class about resume's and the future and I just thought, "OH! I am GRADUATING in a few months and then I will need to find a REAL job... is hostessing REALLY helping me do what I want to do in my life and my career or is it a dead end job?" Obviously I realized it is the latter, so immediately after my class I created my new website/portfolio and then called and quit my job. I actually will be starting soon on a research grant in conjunction with another teacher now through May of next year, which will earn me money, experience, and something good to add on to my resume. And I have decided that I am going to paint more, specifically for the 8th International LDS Art Competition. Its due by October 10th so I better get on that. P.S. Also, on a HUGE note...Kana just called me from BOSTON getting ready to board her plane to FRANCE!! I will miss her SO much!!

I pleased to announce that I am now the offical owner of my very own portfolio website. If you would like to check it out it is www.freewebs.com/ruthadowling

This morning I awoke to discover that my trusty stopwatch of 7 years (when I took it from Anna whoops) finally died. Perfect timing. I ran my first 5k since high school (back in 04) and finished in 26 minutes 11 seconds, one second behind a man old enough to be my grandpa, yet only the 4th to finish (It was a stake activity). Am I proud of my time? You bet. Am I upset he beat me? Like you wouldn't believe. And I'm not really sore or anything but I did cry at the end of the race. I don't know why but I think because I finished. I can't wait for the homecoming 5k Oct 11th. I plan on breaking 25. And I will be sure to buy a new stopwatch before then. p.s. Amax has unofficially challenged me to a race in Cali where she now lives. We will pick a winter race and I will come down to race her. I am so excited and it will ROCK!! (Plus, I have an excuse to escape to warmer weather!!)

Man I thought my weekend was crazy. In addition to the accident Saturday night, so many people in the East (including my family) lost electricity Sunday (meaning no a/c and having to clear out the refrigerator by throwing everything away) due to the effects (crazy 55 mph winds) of Hurricane Ike (meaning no school), in addition to the fact that they (the company that was supposed to take care of the car post-accident) "lost" the car!! How do you just LOSE a car?? And I thought not being caught up with my watercolor class was bad... really puts it into perspective. And poor Sarah can't even sit she's in so much pain. On a lighter note, today marks three years ago that Drew and I went on our first date, to the Library until midnight, and then walking through the drive thru at McDonald's followed by a brownie a la mode at Denny's. Ah, so romantic. I can't believe all that was so long ago. What a great night.

never never give up

what are the odds. Drew told me to give up on looking for Princess and I did as of last night. Then, low and behold, one of Drew's friends from freshman year texts me this morning saying that about a week ago his friend at work found PeePee and took her into their home!! What a relief! Not only was my little girl not dead, she found herself a good home here in Provo!! Needless to say, I was elated. This truly shows that you must never give up...even when your husband tells you otherwise. What a relief!

OH yes.

and taking a backseat to everything that has happened today, I am signed up to run my first half marathon on April 4th. I have a 5k next week, another next month, and hopefully a 10K in December (but its a little far away, so I haven't officially signed up for it) to prep me for it. the knee is feeling better (only painful bending down or sitting with it bent) but I still think I will get it checked out. I will keep you posted.

one crazy year ago

I was thinking yesterday about a study abroad that this time last year I was scheduled to be on board for--a fantastic trip to Thailand, Australia, Hong Kong, Mainland China, and a few other assorted places along that area in the space of about 6 weeks (returning prior to the Olympics). It dawned on me that had it not been for that cancellation because I was one of only 3 students who signed up (we needed 20+), causing it to be postponed indefinitely, I would have missed Drew's graduation. I would have missed my parents coming into town and my Lucy giving birth to five beautiful kittens. I would have missed driving out to South Carolina with Anna (quite the experience) and spending a week with my family, not to mention getting my job at Mimi's at the time when they were most desperate to hire. I would have missed taking stained glass and bookbinding, two of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. I would have missed the day that Drew hired to his first "real" job. I would have missed the opportunity of buying this macbook and still saving money because the trip would have cost almost $5000. So I guess what I am trying to say, is that even though it would have been REALLY cool to have gone to the South Rim of Asia, I am really glad that the choice was made for me and I was able to benefit from those experiences I had otherwise. Especially the not seeing Drew for six weeks. That would have been unbearable :)
